Spectrum Township Development Gurgaon, State of Haryana, India

Info

For this Master Plan for a population of 10,000 LTA and their team designed a sustainable solution for the environmentally sensitive site. The desert site is flat, arid, featureless, and subject to monsoon flooding. The annual cycle of flooding offered an ideal solution to utilize the vast amounts of water to give life to the desert before it evaporates without benefit to the land. Together with the engineers a plan was developed to:
re-shape the topography to allow installation of subterranean water barriers and drainage by gradient;
collect monsoon rain in a man-made lake with an underground holding tank and circulation system to provide irrigation and cooling of lake water to support life and vegetation in relatively shallow depths;
recharge the storage capacity of 19 identified subterranean water sources during monsoon rains;
provide separate drinking and greywater distribution systems and other sustainable drainage and sewage solutions.

Buildings were designed to mimic the form of motorcycle engines to maximize natural cooling without AC systems, and orientation of all apartments placed one side in the sun and one in shadow at all times of day to create a temperature difference adequate to generate natural draft ventilation.
