This community Ice Arena with an Olympic size Ice Surface and seating for 1,200 with amenities such as lounges, meeting rooms, exercise room,
concession stand and all support functions including required site development was completed within the scheduled time and below the estimated budget.
FEATURES: 50M x 64M “fire and
seismic safe” engineered wood roof structure pioneering the very first use of “Parallam” in a large-scale structural application. In tendering with alternative steel structure the lowest bid for this structure was $ 264,000.00 (25%) lower than the lowest steel
bid. Other benefits of this type of structure include.
-
Detailed design, engineering and pre-manufacturing of the entire structure can be done in advance and off
site, significantly reducing construction period on site. The complete roof structure was erected within 4 weeks.
-
Engineered wood is sustainable, locally manufactured in BC and an environment preserving material.
-
Wood allows higher air humidity than steel before condensation and dripping on ice occurs. Mechanical air circulation and ventilation was selected in
preference to desiccant dehumidifying units, significantly reducing operating energy costs. It is said to have the “fastest ice” in the Lower Mainland as a result of higher air humidity.
-
Better acoustical characteristics result in lower costs of acoustical treatment and audio distribution.
-
Building envelope is designed to facilitate year-round ice activities with large roof overhangs protecting the perimeter glazing from sun exposure,
but allowing penetration of generous amounts of daylight which reflects off the ceiling limiting the need for electrical lighting during the day and significantly reducing operating costs.
SCOPE OF WORK INCLUDED:
-
Alternative studies leading to a Master Plan for the overall Sunny Side Acres Park (+/- 400 Ac).
-
Feasibility study analyzing capital costs and operation costs of five alternative design concepts with seating capacity ranging from 500 up to 5000
and including comparison of costs for NHL and Olympic size.
-
Finalizing program in liaison with representatives of City Council, Parks and Recreation and engineering Departments and numerous User groups.
