The project is located on Nuxalk Reserve outside of Bella – Coola in Northern Coastal Region of BC and was completed in 1988.

The Funding and Development Process Review provided by Department of Northern and Indian Affairs and Public Works and Government Services Canada. 

FEATURES:

  • Programming for school K-12, floor area (+/-) 2.100 Sq. M.

  • Construction Budget 3.4 million Dollars including Significant Development of on-site and off-site services.

  • Sustainable construction technologies utilizing 100% wood, engineered wood and other value added materials and finishes without toxic emissions.

  • The fully forested site area for the school, parking and soccer field, was cleared and with the use of a portable sawmill, 100% of the harvested logs were milled on site into structural and non-structural building material utilized in the construction of the school.

  • Building envelope and mechanical systems designed for low energy consumption and low maintenance costs.

  • Project Delivery Involved development of all designs in close cooperation during design meetings with all user groups of the community such as:

  1. Pupils and Teachers

  2. Parents and Grandparents

  3. Chief and Members of the Council

  • Project was constructed with local band labour and under the construction management contract.

The project was completed within the scheduled time and below the estimated budget.
