This community Ice Arena with an Olympic size ice surface, children’s “skating pond” and seating for 600 was completed under a Construction Management Contract on time and below the estimated budget. Amenities include, lounges, meeting rooms, exercise room, concession stand and support. The scope of work also included renovation and upgrade of an existing swimming pool and design of required site developments.

FEATURES:  60 M x 85 M “fire and seismic safe” engineered wood roof structure. In tendering with alternative steel structure, the lowest bid for this structure was $ 462,000.00 (33%) lower that the lowest steel bid. Other benefits of this type of structure are the same as those highlighted in the synopsis of the South Surrey Ice Arena.

  • First, and as far as we know the only facility in Canada utilizing heat generated by refrigeration resulting in an overall energy saving of about $30,000.00 per year, a significant and lasting benefit compared to one time capital cost of $17,000.00.  The waste heat is used to heat: domestic hot water for showers, ventilation air for change rooms, seating area using a slab radiant system, outside air for arena and pool ventilation and arena ice scrapings.

  • Building envelope is designed for year round ice activities and computerized system controls all heating, cooling and lighting functions to optimize system performance and minimize energy use.

  • Dry–O–Tron heat recovery units are used to accomplish dehumidification.

  • An excellent acoustic performance is attributable to the type of roof structure and the use of ceiling mounted Tectum panels covering approximately 40% of the ceiling area.  The sound system is multi-zoned, enabling separate music or speech programs to be routed to all different areas of the Recreation Centre without conflict, ensuring speech clarity and music quality.

  • Large roof dormers and perimeter glazing protected by roof overhangs allow generous penetration of daylight which reflects off the ceiling limiting the need for electrical lighting during the day, significantly reducing operating costs.

  • Children's “Skating Pond” with snowfall making equipment doubling as figure skating practice ice.

  • Designed and equipped to accommodate also the training and competitions of speed skating and figure skating.
